James Joyce is known for his deconstructed smiley face paintings. He was chosen by Banksy to be part of his Dismaland exhibition in 2015 where he showed a video installation of his iconic face.
For years he has worked with separating the distinctive features that make up a smiley or clown face, scattering them around the canvas. While the work is objectively not a represenation of a face, the viewer knows immediately what the artist is trying to convey. Very simialr to Damien Hirst's Mickey and Minnie Mouse series where he extrapolates the crude shapes that make up the two Disney characters and creates a composition that to all intents and purposes is just a series of circles yet is unmistakenly Mickey and Minnie to the viewer's eye.
After years of working in a circular medium Joyce has released two prints in a square format alongside the two paitings from which he made the prints. These works are exclusviely avialable at Guy Hepner.
"This new print release sees a new direction for me. I have evolved the classic deconstructed face motif moving from bright colour palette to more muted, darker colour tones and a transition from circular to rectangular format." - James Joyce
