Leeah Joo's artworks celebrate the beauty and rich traditions entwined with Korean textiles, infused with cross-cultural references that deepen their significance. Originally from Seoul, Joo migrated to the United States at the age of 10, settling in Indiana with her artist parents.
Her fascination with graphic novels, particularly Manga's blend of fantasy and enigma, fueled her artistic journey. In the absence of an American equivalent, Joo's craft evolved from pen and ink to the realm of painting.
She pursued studies in art history and painting at Indiana University before attaining her MFA in painting from the Yale School of Art. Drawing inspiration from the technical precision of Northern Renaissance masters, her recent oeuvre embraces trompe l'oeil techniques, aiming to craft illusions from tangible materials. Joo employs drapery as a still-life motif, captivating viewers as the folds and creases of her lavishly adorned fabrics transform into landscapes reminiscent of mountains, oceans, and vast landscapes.
Joo's work is inspired by the enigmatic and hidden. In her paintings she teases our predisposition to probe and uncover. The richly detailed paintings of drapery in her Parrhasius Series present an open-ended narrative, inviting us to question what lies behind the curtain.
